Tonight was interesting. So I’m fairly sure that I haven’t put forth much effort to hide my disdain for the camera in the iPhone. Well tonight I had fun with it I must admit. Well okay, not quite the iPhone. It was more what I used *with* the iPhone that I had fun with. Let me explain.
So I was in my apartment wondering what I could do for a photo tonight and I got an idea when I saw my Holga sitting on the shelf. If the holga which is a toy camera with a junk plastic lens can get cool photos, why can’t the iPhone?
When shooting with a Holga you embrace the imperfections in the lens, the warping of the image, the light leaks. So I thought, why not stop worrying about getting a good shot and try to warp it in some way purposefully?
At first, I began by trying to shoot through the pro lenses of my dSLR. That didn’t work because I couldn’t physically get the iPhone close enough to the other lens to come close to filling the frame with anything decent. So then I remembered I had borrowed a little plastic magnifying glass from someone at work. Its the kind that has a bunch of little circles of differing magnifications. So I started playing. I ended up liking the smallest (most magnification) circle. It basically allowed me to do close-up/macro photography with my iPhone.
I studied geology in college and still collect minerals to this day. So I shot a bunch of images of minerals in my collection. I couldn’t decide on one image, so I combined three. Keep in mind that the gold, red, and orange crystals are very small – less than 1/8″ across! I am definitely going to be playing with this more in the coming days. |
Tomorrow night Mike and I are having dinner guests. Confident that they do not read this blog, I’ll share a bit of our meal.Mike, who is the resident master chef, decided to make homemade ravioli stuffed with roasted chestnuts, marscapone and cinnamon topped with a brown butter sauce. Delicious. We teamed up (I made the homemade pasta, he roasted the chestnuts and made the filling) and pre-made the ravioli tonight as it’s rather time intensive. Here you see a row of ready-to-be-folded raviolis.Oh, and did I mention it snowed six inches today? Love, love, love. |
Excellent job Jeff! It’s like making lemonade when life hands you lemons. Great image(s), very creative thinking, and bravo.
Thanks Sara! I have to say, this is the first time I’m actually having fun and not frustrated by the iPhone’s camera! I’m looking forward to seeing what I come up with now that I’m thinking outside of the box.
