| When I left the office today and was walking across Boston Common I saw a huge crowd of people over near Frog Pond and heard music playing. So I wandered over and discovered that tonight was the opening ceremony for this season’s ice skating. So I hung around for a bit and watched skaters that had taken lessons at Frog Pond perform. The kids I saw ranged from about 7 or 8 to late teens. And a couple of the older teens were quite good. I had stuff to do, so I didn’t stay too long. But I decided to grab images for tonight’s project post.Because of the shutter lag of the iPhone’s camera, it was very tough to get a shot with the skater anything but a barely-visible ghost. I’d love to claim photographic prowess here, but this skater being fairly visible was a fair amount of trial and error in order to time it right, along with a healthy dose of luck thrown in. | This evening I headed down to Bellevue to check out “Cupcakes and Champagne,” which was the dual studio opening of both Butterfly Design Studio and Kirsten Shultz Photography. I spent most of my time wandering through Kirsten’s new office/gallery space. I had the chance to shoot with Kirsten just about a year ago at the Sun Valley Ballet’s Nutcracker performance. She is a photo-journalist by training and trade, though now does a swift business in wedding photography here in Sun Valley.
While wandering through Kirsten’s gallery a gentleman named John struck up a conversation with me regarding art. While sipping my personal-sized bottle of champagne through a straw (I kid you not) we talked about photography, illustration, and the meaning of art versus representation. I actually had to whip out my Moleskine and take notes on some of the key points after he departed. My mind is still in a tizzy. Considering the current brain mush inside my cabesa, I feel lucky I was able to shoot anything tonight. I was drawn to the repeating patterns that came together in this shot, as well as the contrast of the glass against it’s dark background. The slight green tint is not a fancy Photoshop trick, but instead a FL-G1 green gel illuminated by a simple pen light. |
